| Flood Risk Assessment |

The UK planning regime is increasingly focussing on developing
sustainable communities, reducing the impact upon the environment.
A key factor is ensuring that development does not either impact
upon, or become affected by, the flooding of inland and coastal
waters. Flood Risk Assessment and the design of surface water
run off solutions has become an integral component of the development
process.
The Local Authorities, Environment Agency (England and Wales)
and SEPA (in Scotland) are principally responsible for ensuring
that new developments, and improvements of the existing infrastructure,
do not exacerbate flooding by increasing rates of runoff or
displacing flood waters. Even outside of areas of flood risk
new developments exceeding 1 hectare require a Flood Risk Assessment.
Alexander Associates is a multi-disciplined engineering end
environmental consultancy, encompassing civil and structural
engineering and environmental issues. We are experienced in
dealing with all aspects of drainage design and flood risk assessment
in accordance with Planning Policy Guidance note PPG25 (replaced
by PPS25 in December 2006). In a complex discipline we pride
ourselves on our solutions being pragmatic and effective.
Key services include:
- Topographical surveys of the surface levels across a site
and drainage levels to OS datum.
- Assessment of existing drainage capacity and flow rates.
- Evaluation of whether a property is within a flood plain.
- Modelling of flood displacement due to changes in land
use and topography.
- Drainage design integrating the concepts of Sustainable
Urban Drainage, as required.
- Developing discharge consent applications and obtaining
necessary approvals.
- Assessment of existing flood protection measures and design
of required improvements.
- Modelling the effects of a development on groundwater levels
and the flooding of basements.
- Evaluation of the risks to the environment and human health
posed by flooding.
- Developing and agreeing Flood Risk Assessment reports with
the regulatory bodies.
- Training staff on the risks of flooding to developments.
